Creaform: metrology and 3D technologies for industry

19 de May de 2021

Creaform, a Quebec-based company and part of the Ametek Group, a global leader in the manufacture of electronic and electromechanical instruments, will be present at Mindtech 2021 to bring the latest in 3D measurement technologies and engineering services.

Booming technology

Since its inception, industrial metrology has evolved exponentially hand in hand with technology, an area that Creaform has been intimately familiar with since its founding in 2022 in Quebec, Canada. The company develops, manufactures and sells portable and automated 3D measurement technologies and specializes in 3D engineering services.

Ensuring the quality and accurate calibration of any industrial component is essential today in an Industry 4.0 environment, which companies cannot do without. To this end, innovative solutions such as 3D scanning, reverse engineering, quality control, non-destructive testing, product development and numerical simulation (FEA/CFD) have become essential. These are areas in which creaform operates on a day-to-day basis, bringing expertise in a wide variety of sectors, including automotive, aerospace, consumer products, heavy industries, healthcare, manufacturing, oil & gas, power generation, and research & education.

International presence

With several innovation centers in Lévis (Canada) and Grenoble (France), Creaform has offices around the world: United States, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Spain, China, Japan, Thailand, Korea and Singapore. Its essence is international, as part of AMETEK Ultra Precision Technologies, a division of AMETEK Inc. (a global leader in the manufacture of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, with annual sales of $5 billion).

The company lands at Mindtech for the first time with its sights set on the Iberian market, a strategic axis for its business development. Iker Landa, Sales Director for Creaform Iberia, tells us all the details in this interview.

Why did you decide to be at Mindtech?

For Creaform, it’s the first time we’ve participated in Mindtech. The location of the fair in Galicia, with its proximity to Portugal, is the ideal place for us to showcase our metrology systems for quality control, reverse engineering, product development, design, additive manufacturing and much more to the industry in this region.

The metal industry is a key sector for us. Optical metrology instruments, such as portable 3D scanners, enable metal inspectors to measure parts faster than with conventional systems. As a result, valuable time is saved and spent on final reports required by customers. Optical metrology ensures reduced inspection time and production costs, resulting in higher quality parts.

What new features will you bring to Mindtech 2021?

After the trade fair hiatus as a result of covid-19, we are very pleased to be able to present our latest innovations at Mindtech. We will be present at the show especially with the HandySCAN 3D | SILVER and MetraSCAN BLACK scanners.

SILVER series of the HandySCAN 3D line

At Mindtech we will be presenting the industry standard in metrology-grade handheld 3D scanners. This proven and reliable patented technology captures accurate and repeatable 3D measurements of any complex surface in any location. The scanner is optimized to meet the needs of technology innovators and engineering professionals looking for a powerful, affordable and reliable way to improve product development, shorten time to market and reduce development costs.

MetraSCAN BLACK

Another of the flagship products we will be at Mindtech with is the range of portable optical CMM scanners that are especially fast, accurate and versatile. The MetraSCAN is designed for metrology and manufacturing professionals who want to deliver quality parts quickly and efficiently. It is unaffected by production area vibration, part movement or environmental instability. It is designed to operate in both the metrology lab and production area and can perform metrology grade measurements and 3D surface inspections on a wide variety of parts, regardless of size, material, finish or complexity, achieving accuracy down to 0.025 mm. When used in combination with the HandyPROBE, which offers probing capability as an option, users can harness the power of both 3D scanning and probing to perform a complete and optimized inspection process.

What is the added value for your company at this fair?

For Creaform, northwestern Spain is a tremendously important enclave for the development of our growth strategy in the country. Increasing the presence of our products in the Galician industry is one of our priorities, as it is a very varied ecosystem of industries that fits perfectly with the versatility of our 3D scanners. In addition, from Mindtech, we will cover territories such as Asturias and Portugal, where Creaform already has a presence.

How do you see the economic recovery after the impact of covid-19?

Creaform has been a growing company since its creation in 2004. Since then, we have always grown by more than double digits, the only exception being 2009 with the great global financial crisis.

“Covid-19 was an unprecedented setback in the modern era and has changed many of our habits, who knows if for good. Despite this, Creaform Iberia’s (Spain and Portugal) performance maintained the growth path in 2020 and the first half of 2021 is underpinning this sustained growth path.”

“Our impression is that the industry in general is hopeful about the future and investments in equipment are starting to surface and we believe that the second half of the year will be even stronger so both the location and timing of Mindtech are strategic for us and we have high hopes for it.
